Joe Abuso of Genuine Hospitality Consulting has written the wine list for La Casa del Caballo, a fine Mexican steak house featuring fire-seared beef and other traditional dishes from the heart of northern Mexico. Located in the former home of the legendary La Strada, La Casa del Caballo is the creation of Mexican-native Carlos Abedrop, who for nearly a decade has owned the internationally popular steak restaurant in Saltillo, Mexico.
Among his visitors in Saltillo were numerous Houstonians who encouraged him to open a similar restaurant in steak-loving Houston. Because his wife is from Houston, he was already familiar with the city’s reputation for dining out and for the easy access to the quality meats and other ingredients he demands for his customers.
Now, nearly a decade after opening his restaurant in Saltillo, he has opened La Casa del Caballo on lower Westheimer, in the heart of Houston’s culinary scene. He runs both restaurants, traveling between homes in Houston and Saltillo.
The wine list Joe wrote for the restaurant features a very wide selection of wines from around the globe, concentrating on the wines of Spain, South America and California. Wines from Champagne, Burgundy, Bordeaux, the Loire, the Rhône, New Zealand, Australia, Oregon, Tuscany, Piedmont, Veneto, Sicily and, of course, Mexico are also represented. Dessert wines, half bottles and large format bottles are featured. Each wine was chosen to pair beautifully with La Casa del Caballo’s menu, and to insure that every guest’s mood could be satisfied. Markups, as per Carlos’ wishes, are very reasonable.
Joe also assisted in choosing and setting up terms with preferred vendors, as well as with the menu pricing.
